I Tried Replacing Every Plastic Product in My Kitchen. Here's What Actually Worked.
OK so I got a little obsessed. After going down a TikTok rabbit hole about ocean plastic (you know the one with the turtle), I decided to try and replace every single plastic product in my kitchen. All of them.
Three months later, here's what I learned: some swaps are genuinely life-changing, and some are... not it.
The Swaps That Changed My Life (No Exaggeration)
**Bamboo paper towels.** I was the most skeptical about these. Paper towels you can WASH? Sounds like a gimmick, right? Nope. The Ecolifestyle bamboo ones are genuinely more absorbent than regular paper towels, and I just throw them in with my regular laundry. I've bought one pack in three months. I used to go through a roll a week.
**Stasher silicone bags.** These replaced every single ziplock in my house. I use them for everything — meal prep, snacks, even sous vide cooking. They're not cheap at $32 but honestly, do the math on how many boxes of Ziplocs you buy in a year. It pays for itself fast.
**Walnut scrubber sponges.** My regular sponges used to get nasty after like a week. These Grove Co walnut ones last way longer, they don't smell, and they're actually better at scrubbing stuck-on food. Plus they compost when you're done with them. This was the swap I tell everyone about.
The Ones That Were Fine (But Not Mind-Blowing)
**Bamboo utensils for home use.** They work. They're nice. But honestly my regular metal silverware was already not plastic, so this swap felt unnecessary for at home. WHERE they shine is as a travel set — I keep the Bam-Booty set in my work bag and use them instead of the plastic forks from takeout places.
**Bamboo straws.** Look, I like them. They work. But the cleaning brush situation is a bit annoying, and I end up just drinking without a straw most of the time anyway. If you're a daily iced coffee person, get these. If you're not a big straw user, skip it.
What I Went Back To (Being Honest)
**Bamboo cutting boards to replace plastic ones.** Technically more sustainable, but the ones I tried warped after a few dishwasher runs. I went back to my plastic cutting boards and I'm not going to feel bad about it — they'll last me 10+ years.
The Takeaway
You don't have to be perfect. The three swaps that stuck for me — bamboo towels, silicone bags, and walnut sponges — have eliminated probably 90% of the single-use plastic from my kitchen. That's a massive win. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
Start with one or two swaps. See how they fit into your actual life. Then go from there.
